Glassware Buying Guide

Whether you are an entertainer, a connoisseur or just after a quiet drink at home we're here to make choosing the right glassware easy. Did you know that using the right glass can actually give you a better experience whilst accentuating the smell, texture and flavour of a drink? There are many types of sizes and styles available so let's look at the most popular options:

Beer Glass - As simple a name as you can give, it's used for beer! Also known as a Pilsner Glass, beer glasses should NOT be put in the freezer to get the most out of your favourite brew (the condensation dilutes your brew!) Typical size: ~450mL

Champagne Flute - A slender, tulip shaped glass designed to show off the sparkling bubbles and preserve the chill of Sparkling Wine or Champagne. Typically used for celebrations and toasts.  Typical size: ~200mL

Double Old Fashioned (D.O.F) - A short tumbler used traditionally for spirits on the rocks (e.g. Whisky), and also cocktails such as the Old Fashioned from which it receives its name. Also known as a lowball glass or a rocks glass. Typical size: ~400mL

Hi Ball Glass - A straight-sided glass often used for mixed drinks served on the rocks, who doesn't love a gin and tonic?! It can also be used to serve the softer choices juice, soft drink, water etc. Typical size: ~450mL

Red Wine Glass - A thin stemmed glass with a round bowl tapering inward at the rim.  Larger than a White Wine Glass, it is designed to enhance the aroma and flavour of the wine whilst assisting it to breathe. Red wine glasses can have particular styles such as a Bordeaux Glass (tall with a broad bowl for Cabernet Sauvignons and Syrahs) and a Burgandy Glass (broad, for more delicate wines such as Pinot Noirs) Also known as a Wine Goblet or Grand Vini. Typical size: ~450mL

White Wine Glass - A thin stemmed glass with an elongated oval bowl tapering inward at the rim.  Smaller than a Red Wine Glass the narrower shape reduces the chances of warming the wine whilst still enhancing the aroma and flavour. Also known as a Wine Goblet. Typical size: approx 350mL

Other things to consider when purchasing glassware is how often you entertain - the frequent entertainer may want glassware that is dishwasher safe and can easily be replaced.  For those who prefer extravagance you may want to invest in a luxury set of crystalware, however be careful as you will need to handwash these.  For the ultimate wine connoisseur a decanter is the perfect accompaniment to a new set of glassware.
